Why is Desktoptopia free?

Desktoptopia is supported by users and advertisers. Didn't notice any advertising? That's because the ads that we allow aren't ads at all, they're beautiful desktops that happen to reflect a brand.

I paid for a 1.0 license, why is it free now?

First of all, thank you so much for your support. It was always our dream to collect just enough support to make it free to all users. Thanks to all of you who supported the development of Desktoptopia, we are finally able to realize our vision of making it free, and growing our artist community. Of course, if you’d like to continue supporting our development, you can make contributions via PayPal.

Does Desktoptopia support mulitiple monitors?

Yep. You lucky users with multiple monitors can decide how you want Desktoptopia to work with your monitor set up. You can have twice the love and duplicate the desktop on both monitors, only show it on one (whichever one you want), or show different desktops on each monitor.

How does Desktoptopia work?

Once you've installed Desktoptopia, you can set up your preferences for what categories of Desktops you'd like to see, and how often to change them.  Then the magic begins, as Desktoptopia signals design teams from all over the world.

These über talented designers then pick a gorgeous desktop from the categories you've requested, then they gently take it from our climate controlled shelves with sterilized contamination-free gloves and place it onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspects and polishes your desktop it to make sure it is in the best possible condition before delivering.

Our compression and delivery specialist from Japan lights a candle and a hush falls over the crowd as he places your desktop into the finest gold-lined particalization chamber that money can buy.

From within the chamber your desktop is then energized using a proprietary and highly complex particalization process.  The millions of pixels are then streamed through our super fast, feather-lined T12 lines- right to your computer.

We all have a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party marches down the street following the T12 lines, waving 'Bon Voyage!' to your desktop, on its way to you.

Desktoptopia then proceeds to put all those pixels back together on your desktop for you to enjoy. This, of course, all happens in milliseconds.

We're all exhausted but can't wait to send you your next desktop.

I wish it worked on my iPhone.

So do we. And we're working on developing an iPhone version. Look for that in the near future.

How do I uninstall Desktoptopia?

We're sorry to see you go.

On the Mac, to completely remove Desktoptopia, first quit System Preferences, and then delete all the files in Library/PreferencePanes/Desktoptopia AND Library/Application Support/Desktoptopia. Empty your trash and Desktoptopia will be completely removed.

Is there something we could have done better? Please let us know.

How do I submit my own desktops?

Simple. Just visit our upload desktops page and follow the instructions.

Why do artists participate (what's in it for them)?

Originally Desktoptopia was a way for artists to share ideas and inspire each other. But as it has become more and more popular, it has become a way for artists to get noticed. Every background links back to the artist through the menubar, so it also drives traffic to artist websites.
